A Brief on Education in England

In England, education is taken very seriously and has been made compulsory for all children between the ages 5-16, according to Section 7 of the 1996 Education Act. The government sponsors the children’s education but some may opt to go to independent schools, where they will pay their own fees. Education across England is divided into four main stages; Key stage one (primary School), key stage two (secondary school), key stage three (further education) and key stage four (higher education). A child is approximately 16 years old at the end of key stage three. After key stage three, students must take the General Certificate of Secondary education, which determines the university or college they will attend.

There are so many universities in England but not all are prestigious. They all differ in the courses they offer and how good these courses are. This will determine the scores of the students and the ability of a student to apply the acquired skills in his career. Some of these universities and colleges are;

  • Imperial College London, mainly focused on science and technology
  • London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which ranks 35th in the world offering the course, as the name suggests.
  • The University College of London took the seventh spot in the world due to its remarkable performance during the preceding years. It is located in the heart of London.

These are just a few of the many prestigious universities in London which ranked 2nd, 4th, and 1st in England respectively.

With these many universities, the choice as to which university one will attend becomes tough. However, there are some points one should consider while making the choice. First of all, it is important to know which modules are offered in which university. This will surely help one narrow down the list. It is also important to consider how well the university ranks compared to others and whether it will be a good stepping stone in the working world.
